The Chronology of Mary Nicholson's Life
1908 Born in Clifton, Bristol.
1915 Mother and children move to Wales.
1916 Rejoined father in Putney, London. Taught by mother.
1918/ 26 Putney High School.
1926/30 Exhibition at Somerville College, Oxford, reading English.Two terms away with broken head and one term doing philosophy.
1930/31 Helping with children in Germany. Wrote first book.
1932 SUBLUNARY published by Constable.
1931/32 Trained for House Property Management (Octavia Hill).
1932 Part-time housing work. Married Max Nicholson.
1934 TURN AGAIN published by Constable. Son (Piers) born.
1936 Part-time work for Charles Elton (ecologist).
1937/38 Conducted WEA seminars on philosophy.
1938 Second son (Tom) born.
1940 Evacuated with children to friends in Sussex then Oxford.
Piers (and later Tom) went to Hampden School, Wytham.
Worked full-time for Charles Elton.
Collaborated on papers for the Journal of Animal Ecology
1943/45.  Employed as organiser for Industrial Discussion Clubs.
1945 Employed by the War Workers Clubs to visit around and write pamphlet CLUBS FOR CITIZENS.
1946 Appointed by President of the Board of Trade to the Independent Film Selection Board.
Wrote freelance some memos for Flora Solomon of Marks and Spencer.
Moved to Training Dept, edited training journal, wrote pamphlets.
ESSAY ON MARRIAGE published by Sidgwick and Jackson.
1947 Appointed one of two independent members on the Light Clothing Working Party. Visited factories & wrote chunks of final report.
1948/49 Collaborated with head ofM & S training on TRAINING FOR RETAIL SALES STAFF by Herzberg and Nicholson (later published by Pitmans).
1950 Worked for the Jewellery and Silverware Development Council collecting information and wrote a pamplet for entrants to the industry.
1951 LAUGH OR CRY by Mary Crawford published by Cape
1952 ROSES AARE RED by Mary Crawford published by Cape
1953 ITSELF TO PLEASE by Mary Crawford published by Cape
